Justus Frantz was born in 1944 in Inowrocław, Poland (then Hohensalza, Germany). He began playing piano at age ten. His international career started in 1967 when he and Claus Kanngießer won second prize at the ARD International Music Competition as a cello and piano duo. Frantz debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan in 1970, followed by his U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein in 1975. He founded the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in 1986 and served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador from 1989 until his retirement. Frantz's repertoire focuses on Classical and Romantic periods, particularly works by Mozart.
