Sabir Mateen, born April 16, 1951, in Philadelphia, is an American avant-garde jazz musician and composer. Mateen performs on tenor and alto saxophone, flute, and B♭ and alto clarinet. Originally a percussionist, Mateen began playing flute as a teenager before transitioning to alto and tenor saxophone. In the early 1970s, Mateen performed rhythm and blues, which led to his tenure with the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Mateen collaborated with musicians including Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray, William Parker, and Matthew Shipp. Mateen is a member of the ensemble TEST with Daniel Carter. His discography as a leader or co-leader includes the albums Gettin' Away with Murder (1995), Divine Mad Love (1998), Sun Xing (2001), and Prophecies Come To Pass (2006). Mateen also recorded as a sideman for Earth People, Hamid Drake, and the One World Ensemble.
