Markscheider Kunst, a world music band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, was formed in 1992. The group's unique name is derived from German mining terminology, with "Markscheider" referring to a surveying engineer in mining. Nearly all members were former mining students. Their distinctive sound, influenced by their ex-frontman Seraphim Makangila, blended Russian lyrics with Congolese music styles like soukous and reggae. Their albums include St. Petersburg - Kinshasa Transit in 1998, Krasivosleva (2001), and Cafe Babalu (2006). Markscheider Kunst frequently toured across Europe and contributed to compilations such as Russendisko Hits (2003). The band's side project, St. Petersburg Jazz-Ska Review with Spitfire, began in 2001.
