Alexander Gauk was a Soviet conductor and composer who was born in Odessa, Russian Empire, in 1893. He achieved professional recognition as the chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (1930–1934) and is famous for being the "father of Russian conductors". Gauk served as the musical director of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra (1936–1941) and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (1953–1961). He is noted for reconstructing Sergei Rachmaninoff's First Symphony (1944) and for conducting the world premiere of Aram Khachaturian's Cello Concerto (1946). Gauk died in 1963.
