Václav Smetáček was born on September 30, 1906, in Brno, Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied oboe at the Conservatory of Prague from 1922 to 1930 and won the Schubert prize for his final examination. After joining the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra as an assistant to Josef Deda, Smetáček transitioned into conducting, founding the Prague Wind Quintet in 1928. He began working with Czech Radio in 1934, directing a symphonic ensemble for radio broadcasts and film scores. In 1942, he became the principal conductor of the FOK Orchestra of Prague, later renamed the Prague Symphony Orchestra, leading it until 1972. He conducted numerous international tours and guest appearances across Europe. He passed away on February 18, 1986.
