María de Lourdes Pérez López, born December 30, 1933, in Mexico City, Mexico, was an actress and singer of regional Mexican music, including mariachi, ranchera, and other genres. She began singing at an early age and released her first single with Peerless Records in 1955 after participating in the radio program Buscando una Estrella. Her career took off around 1960 when she performed at the Varcisity Club in London, leading to international tours representing Mexico. She was named Embajadora de la Canción Mexicana by the Consejo Nacional de Turismo and received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Tejano Album for her album Mujer Importante in 1985. María de Lourdes continued to perform extensively in Europe and Asia until her passing on November 6, 1997, following a heart attack at Amsterdam's airport after concluding a tour.
