Robert Mirabal, born on October 6, 1966, in Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, is a renowned Pueblo musician, Native American flute maker, and performer who has blended traditional and contemporary influences to craft a unique musical legacy. Raised in a traditional Tiwa-speaking household, he began crafting flutes at 19 and quickly found his musical voice in Native American flute, inspired by R. Carlos Nakai. After experimenting with various genres in New York City, he returned to his roots, releasing albums like Land (1995), an evocative tribute to the landscapes of Taos, and Native Suite (1996), a collaboration with Bill Miller combining traditional and experimental sounds. His band, Mirabal, released a groundbreaking self-titled album in 1997, fusing rock, funk, and Native American elements. Robert Mirabal gained national recognition through PBS productions like Spirit: A Journey in Dance, Drum, and Song (1998) and Music from a Painted Cave (2001), with the latter becoming a landmark in world music. His later works, such as In the Blood (2007) and The River (2016), showcase his innovative spirit, blending tribal rock, storytelling, and flute melodies.
