Mercedes Peón Mosteiro, born in 1967 in Oza-Cesuras, Spain, is a Galician singer and instrumentalist. Inspired by the pandereteras of the Costa de la Muerte at age 13, she collected traditional Galician music and dances from various villages. Peón formed part of the folk group Xacarandaina and spent 17 years teaching traditional Galician music and dance. Her breakthrough came with her appearance on the TVG program Luar where she showcased her research of Galician music. In 2000, she released her debut album Isué, which won the Artista del Año award from Folkworld magazine and was nominated for BBC Radio 3's Best Artist of the Year. She notably received the Premio Nacional de Música from the Junta de Galicia in 2008. Peón also participated in festivals such as Ortigueira (2002, 2007) and Womex (2010). Her subsequent albums include Sihá (2007), SOS (2010), and Deixaas (2018).
