Hefti studied composition, conducting, clarinet, and chamber music in Zürich and Karlsruhe under notable figures such as Wolfgang Rihm, Cristóbal Halffter, Wolfgang Meyer, Rudolf Kelterborn, and Elmar Schmid. He performed at various festivals including Ultraschall in Berlin and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. Hefti's compositions were performed by prominent orchestras like the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Notable recordings included Diarium and Melencolia I. Hefti received several awards, including the Hindemith-Preis (2015) and the Composer Award of the International Classical Music Awards (2023).
