Michael Thieke is a German jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist. He moved to Berlin in 1993, where he studied at the University of the Arts under Denney Goodhew, Kirk Nurock, and Jerry Granelli. During this period, Thieke performed with Swiss clarinetist Gregor Hotz and Billy Bang’s BOBBI. In 1999, he founded Nickendes Perlgras with Eric Schaefer and Michael Anderson, performing extensively and releasing albums including The Back Vase. Subsequent collaborations included Dok Wallach, TGW, and Eric Schaefer Demontage. Thieke also led the Michael Thieke Unununium and was part of the clarinet duo The International Nothing with Kai Fagaschinski. Since 1999, he has worked extensively in Rome, collaborating with musicians such as Luca Venitucci, Fabrizio Spera, Roberto Bellatalla, and Antonio Borghini.
