Kálmán Oláh is a Hungarian jazz pianist and composer born on March 7, 1970, in Budapest. He originated from a prominent Roma musical family. Oláh began classical piano lessons at age seven and started composing at age 17. He studied jazz piano at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In 1990, he formed the ensemble Trio Midnight with János Egri and Elemér Balázs. The group performed at festivals including Umbria Jazz and Getxo Jazz. Oláh collaborated with musicians such as Lee Konitz, Randy Brecker, and Kenny Wheeler. His discography included the studio recording Sketches from Cello Suites (2001) and the album Images (2007). In 2001, he premiered the musical piece “Concerto for Jazz Orchestra”. Oláh received the Franz Liszt Prize in 2006 and the Gábor Szabó Prize in 2007. He began teaching at the Franz Liszt Academy in 2000.
