Volkmar Andreae, born in 1879 in Bern, Switzerland, was a conductor and composer. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik Köln from 1897 to 1900 and became a solorepetitor at the Münchner Hofoper in 1900. Andreae led several choirs and orchestras, including the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich from 1906 to 1949 and the Konservatorium Zürich from 1914 to 1939. He was a founding member of ISCM Switzerland and conducted at the ISCM World New Music Days in 1925, 1926, and 1930. Andreae is particularly known for his recordings of Anton Bruckner's symphonies, first released in 1953 but gained wider recognition when they appeared on CD in 2009. He passed away in 1962 in Zürich.
