Born in London, England in 1966, Phil Asher was a dance and electronic DJ, mixer, and producer. He became interested in a variety of musical styles – funk, dance, house, soul, and jazz – while working in a record store. He became a DJ in 1991, building a reputation in London as a record spinner before moving into mixing, remixing, and production. Playing a pivotal role in bridging the gap between 4/4 and broken beat, his work gained recognition around the world, making him one of the most popular DJs in the UK. He collaborated with other DJs in different projects including duo Restless Soul as well as recording under pseudonyms such as Basic Soul, Phlash, E & E Sound, and Demonstration. His singles include the Phlash EP (1995), “Find Myself” with Focus (2002), “Namby It Ain’t (I Ain’t Sorry)” (2005), “Need in Me” (2013), the Locked Off EP (2018) and “Sounds and Reasons” with the Mighty Zaf (2020). During his career, he only released one album Phil Asher Presents Focus: Sweet and Sour (2002). Phil Asher was co-founder of the popular Co-Op club, which became ground zero for the broken beat scene. Phil Asher died on January 22, 2021, of a heart attack. He was 55 years old.
