Sten Sandell, born in 1958 in Stockholm, Sweden, is a Swedish pianist known for his work in free jazz and European improvisational music. He studied piano under Mats Persson and Carl-Axel Dominique from 1976 to 1986.
Sandell's career began with various band projects and solo endeavors starting in 1976. He was a key member of the formation Sa Vidare, known for their "structurally organized improvisations." In 1988, he formed the trio Gush with Mats Gustafsson and Raymond Strid. Sandell's discography includes albums like Music From A Water Hole (1991), Under öknar [Rankö rednu] (1996), Gubbröra (2004), Jacana (2014), and Double Music (2021). In 2012, he was awarded the Jazz Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
