Fredrik Ullén, born on April 13, 1968, in Västerås, Sweden, is a Swedish cognitive neuroscientist and concert pianist. He began his musical education at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm under Gunnar Hallhagen and Irène Mannheimer, followed by studies with Liisa Pohjola at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Ullén recorded the complete piano music of György Ligeti and a series of transcriptions of Frédéric Chopin. He recorded Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji's 100 Transcendental Studies for BIS Records from 2000 to 2020, and George Flynn's Trinity, an extensive work lasting over two hours. He released approximately twenty-five albums under various labels including BIS, BMG Classics, Caprice, Danacord, dbProductions, and Phono Suecia. Ullén earned a doctorate from the Karolinska Institutet, became Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the institute in 2010, and was appointed Director at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in 2021.
