Mark Wigglesworth, born on July 19, 1964 in Sussex, England, is a British conductor. He studied at the University of Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music in London, winning the Kondrachine Conducting Competition in Amsterdam in 1989. Wigglesworth began his career as an assistant conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 1993. He served as the principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales from 1996 to 2000 and made his operatic debut in 1991 with Cosi fan Tutte for London's Opera Factory. In April 2006, he was appointed Music Director of La Monnaie in Brussels but resigned before taking up the post. Wigglesworth later became the Music Director of the English National Opera (ENO) in January 2014, a position from which he resigned in March 2016 due to disagreements with the company. He has recorded extensively for labels such as BIS, including releases such as Shostakovich, Symphony No. 4 (2009).
