Lan Shui, born 水蓝 in 1957 in Hangzhou, China, is a Chinese-American conductor. He initially studied violin but shifted to conducting and composition at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Shui continued his education in the US at Boston University and Tanglewood. His career began with roles as assistant conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In 1997, Lan Shui became the Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), a position he held until his retirement in January 2019, when he was named Conductor Laureate. During his tenure with the SSO, he led notable premieres and made commercial recordings for the BIS label. Additionally, Shui served as the Chief Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic from 2007 to 2015. He has received several accolades, including Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award and Singapore's Cultural Medallion in 2009.
