John Luciano Neschling, born on May 13, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a conductor. He studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna, Austria, and with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa at Tanglewood. Neschling won several international competitions, including the Guido Cantelli Competition at the London Symphony Orchestra competition (1972) and La Scala (1976). He returned to Brazil in 1973 to serve as the musical director of the municipal theaters in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In 1997, he took on the challenge of reviving Brazil's symphony orchestra. Under his direction from 1997 to 2008, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP) achieved international acclaim, earning five Diapasons d'Or and a Latin Grammy for their recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. He began serving as artistic director of Municipal Theatre of São Paulo in 2013.
