Douglas Bennett (born September 9, 1967), known professionally as Dr. Israel, is an American singer, music producer, and sound engineer from New Haven, Connecticut. Raised in Philadelphia, Bennett performed as a guitarist in a punk band before traveling to Jamaica in 1993 for a spiritual pilgrimage. He joined a Niyabinghi community, adopted the baptismal name Israel, and later settled in Brooklyn to establish Revolutionsound studio. Bennett co-founded the Illbient genre and released his debut album, 7 Tales of Israel, in 1996. He collaborated with Professor Shehab on the 1995 project Fusion in Dub and with Bill Laswell on the Dubadelic albums. In 1998, Bennett issued the album Inna City Pressure, which featured the single “The Doctor vs. The Wizard”. His discography included Black Rose Liberation (2001) and Another Day in Babylon (2002). In 2018, he produced the album Die Jim Crow to address injustices in the legal system.
