The Bushwackers, an Australian folk and country music band also known as a bush band, was formed in 1970 in Melbourne by Dave Isom, Bert Kahanoff, and Jan Wositzky. The group initially performed under the name Original Bushwhackers and Bullockies Bush Band. Their debut album, The Shearers Dream, was released in 1974, marking their first major release. In 1976, they gained significant attention with their cover version of "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", which was later listed in the APRA Top 30 Australian songs in 2001. Their studio albums Bushfire (1978), Dance Album (1980), and Faces In The Street and Beneath The Southern Cross (both 1981) achieved notable chart success, with Dance Album reaching number 35 on the Australian Kent Music Report. Throughout their career, The Bushwackers had an ever-changing lineup and released several albums, including Down There For Dancing (1982) and the compilation So Far... 1974-1994 (1994).
