The Rugbys, a rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, formed in 1965 by Chris Hubbs (guitar), Steve McNicol (guitar), Mike Hoerni (bass guitar), Eddy Vernon (keyboards), and Glen Howerton (drums). Initially performing covers, The Rugbys transitioned to original music as local competition intensified. Their first singles, "Walking the Streets Tonight" and "Stay With Me", were released in 1968 and gained local radio play on WAKY and WKLO. The band's breakthrough came with the B-side of "Stay With Me", a song called "You, I", which climbed to Number 1 on both local stations. Signed to Shelby Singleton’s Nashville-based label Amazon Records, they re-released "You, I" in 1969, achieving national success with a peak at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching similar positions on Cash Box and Record World charts. The song was also released internationally. In late 1969, The Rugbys released their debut album Hot Cargo, which received mild success due to lack of promotion. Their follow-up single "Wendegahl the Warlock" charted at Number 122 on Cash Box and Number 84 on Record World. The band toured extensively in 1969-70, sharing bills with artists like Bob Seger and Grand Funk Railroad. In 2007, Gear Fab Records released an anthology album featuring previously unreleased material titled The Lost Sessions.
