Lothar Hensel, born September 14, 1961, in Dormagen, Germany, is a bandoneon player and composer. He studied music at the Berlin University of the Arts, focusing on clarinet while also beginning his journey with the bandoneon. In 1990, he traveled to Buenos Aires to refine his skills under teachers Arturo Penón and Néstor Marconi. Hensel's career includes collaborations with notable orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and prominent soloists like guitarist Quique Sinesi. His compositions often blend South American tango elements with classical European chamber music. Notable works include the 2001 chamber opera Ein letzter Tango for the Mecklenburg State Theatre in Schwerin and the 2007 opera Pamina lebt. Hensel has performed with his ensembles tango fusión and Septísimo Tango, and he was a music teacher at Gebrüder Montgolfier Gymnasium until the end of the 2019/20 school year.
