John Howard Chester, born on December 26, 1941, in Melbourne, Australia, is a singer-songwriter. He began his career in October 1959 with The Jaywoods, transitioning to rock music before shifting to country music in 1969. His first single "Hokey Pokey" reached the top 10 in Melbourne in 1961. With his band Jigsaw, he achieved five top 30 hit singles, including "Gwen (Congratulations)" in 1971 and "World's Greatest Mum" in 1973. Chester toured nationally with notable artists including The Beatles, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. He hosted TV series such as Teen Time on Ten and Country Road, and worked as a radio announcer. He won Golden Guitars at the Country Music Awards of Australia for best-selling track in 1975 and Male Vocalist of the Year from 1981 to 1983. In 1994, he received the Songmaker of the Year Award from the Tamworth Songwriters Association.
