Herbst In Peking was a German rock band founded in 1987 in East Berlin by Rex Joswig. The initial lineup included guitarist Alexander Istschenko, bassist Hans “Tomato” Narva, drummer Benno Verch, and keyboardist Torsten “Dr. Totenhöfer” Ratheischak. The band's name is derived from a book title by Boris Vian. Herbst In Peking gained attention for their critical stance against the official culture policy of East Germany. Their first album, To Be H.I.P., was released in 1990 on Happy Valley / KPM. The single "Bakschischrepublik" became an anthem during the Wendezeit (turning point) in the DDR rock scene. In 1993, they released their second album, Terrible Herbst, on Stay Hip Records.
