The For Carnation, an American post-rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, was formed in 1994 by Brian McMahan. The group's distinctive sound was influenced by McMahan's previous band, Slint. Their EP, Fight Songs, was released on Matador Records in 1995, followed by another EP, Marshmallows, in 1996. These EPs were later compiled into the album Promised Works, released by Runt in 1997 and reissued by Touch and Go Records in 2007. The band's full-length album, The For Carnation, was released on Touch and Go Records in 2000. The band returned in December 2009 to perform at the Ten Years of ATP, All Tomorrow's Parties music festival in England. The track "Alfredo's Welcome" appeared on What's Up Matador, a 1997 compilation of bands on Matador Records. Another track, "The Bike", was included as a free download on the compilation album White Power is For Dummies in 2016.
