Kicks Like A Mule was formed in the United Kingdom by Richard Russell and Nick Halkes, both of whom were employed at XL Recordings at the time of the group’s inception. The duo first attracted attention with the single "The Bouncer" in 1992, which entered the UK Singles Chart at Number Seven and was released on Rebel MC’s Tribal Bass label. The track’s repetitive vocal sample of a club bouncer became a defining hook, and the single established the pair’s reputation for blending electronic beats with club culture references. Following the success of "The Bouncer", the duo issued "Number One" the same year, featuring Longsy D, also on Tribal Bass, and later remixed tracks for artists such as Awesome 3 and London Posse, contributing to the London Underground EP on XL Records in 1993. In 2007, the single "Gravity's Rainbow" was released, reflecting a continued presence in the electronic scene. The duo’s collaborative efforts expanded to include remixes for M.I.A., Axwell, and The Gossip, and live DJ sets at events such as Bestival and Break! in 2008. Under the moniker K.L.A.M., they remixed and supported The Prodigy during parts of the arena tour and performed at Bestival in 2010, marking the latest documented activity of the group.
