Decoder is the collective stage name of drum and bass jungle producers Darren Beale and Mark Caro. Beale began his career in 1991 using various aliases, creating old-school hardcore tracks. He continued refining deep jungle sounds under the Orca and Koda aliases on Lucky Spin Records and Deejay Recordings, releasing "Tranquility to Earth" in 1994. In 1995, Beale adopted the Decoder pseudonym, pioneering the dark or 'tech step' style of drum & bass. The duo's releases appeared on various labels, including Breakbeat Culture with Markee Ledge as Decoder & Substance and Tech Itch Recordings. Their debut album, Dissection, was released in 1998 on Hardleaders Records. Notable tracks include "Headlock" and "Deception", along with collaborations such as EKO with Mark Caro. Beale later formed the band Kosheen with Markee Ledge.
