Charlotte Sophie Pauline Lehmann, known as Lotte Lehmann, and born on February 27, 1888, in Perleberg, Germany, was a German-American operatic soprano. She debuted professionally in 1910 at the Hamburger Oper as the second boy in Die Zauberflöte. Her breakthrough came when she replaced a soprano in Lohengrin, leading to significant roles such as Agathe in Der Freischütz and Micaëla in Carmen. In 1914, Lehmann joined the Vienna Court Opera (later Vienna State Opera), where she performed over 50 roles. She sang internationally in major cities. After refusing to comply with Nazi demands in 1933, Lehmann emigrated to the United States in 1934, becoming a prominent figure at the Metropolitan Opera until her retirement in 1951. Lehmann made nearly 500 recordings of operas and Lieder and later worked as a vocal coach. She passed away on August 26, 1976, in Santa Barbara.
