Heavily influenced by her father's musicality, Anita Lerche began singing in her school choir in Copenhagen at the age of seven. After school, she moved to England and went on to study musical theatre at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Moving back to Denmark post study, Lerche began her career in musical theatre, playing starring roles in many musical productions including Trial By Jury, West Side Story and The White Horse Inn before releasing her debut solo album, I Love A Piano, in 2005. Soon after, Lerche embarked on a journey to India where she discovered a love for Eastern music, in particular Punjabi and the whole Punjab culture. Staying on an apple orchard in Punjab, Lerche began studying the Punjabi language and her talent was recognised through the offer of a recording contract. Choosing to remain in India, Lerche recorded and released her album Heer From Denmark, the first ever Western solo female to record an album in Punjabi. As Lerche's take on Pubjabi music was embraced by the Punjab culture, she began branching out even more, performing Bollywood songs as well as Hindi Bhajans and Shabads. In 2009 Lerche recorded the track Maahiya, a collaboration with rapper Cheshire Cat which went on to earn them the World Music Track Of The Year Award from the Danish Music Awards. In 2010, Gry Louise Kolind directed the documentary Fra Herlev Til Bollywood, about Lerche and her desire to be in a Bollywood film, and in 2012 the documentary Kashish Punjab Di was broadcast around the subject of Lerche's life and career.
