Sam Duffie Hinton, born on March 31, 1917 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was an American folk singer and marine biologist. He studied zoology at Texas A&M University before moving to Washington D.C., where he formed the semi-professional singing group the Texas Trio. In 1940, Hinton settled in Los Angeles and enrolled at UCLA to study marine biology. Hinton's notable works include "Buffalo Boy" and the "Barnyard Song", recorded for the Library of Congress in 1947. His first commercial recording was "Old Man Atom" on Columbia in 1950. He also released several albums including A Family Tree of Folk Songs (1957) and The Real McCoy (1958). He founded the San Diego Folk Song Society in 1957. Hinton passed away on September 10, 2009.
