Oscar Brand, born on February 7, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, was a folk singer-songwriter and radio host. He began his career as a young man living in Borough Park, Brooklyn, graduating from Erasmus Hall High School and later from Brooklyn College with a BS in psychology. In the late 1940s, Brand started his long-running radio show on WNYC Radio in New York City, which became the longest-running radio show with only one host in broadcasting history. He released numerous albums throughout his career, including Laughing America (1970), "Why Not the Best?" (1976) and Presidential Campaign Songs, 1789-1996 (2006). Brand composed at least 300 songs and collaborated with notable folk musicians such as Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger. He also wrote several books on folk music and contributed to various musicals and television programs, including Let's Sing Out. Brand passed away on September 30, 2016.
