Kathryn Tickell, OBE, DL, born on 8 June 1967, in Walsall, Staffordshire, is a distinguished British musician renowned for her mastery of the Northumbrian smallpipes and fiddle. Her deep-rooted connection to the musical traditions of Northumbria has significantly influenced her extensive career as a performer, composer, and educator. Raised in a musically inclined family, she was introduced to the piano at six and began learning the Northumbrian smallpipes at nine, inspired by her father, Mike Tickell, a celebrated folk singer. By thirteen, she had won all the traditional open smallpipes competitions. Her early exposure to local musicians like Willie Taylor, Will Atkinson, and Joe Hutton further enriched her musical foundation. In 1984, at sixteen, she released her debut album, On Kielder Side, marking the beginning of a prolific recording career. She has since produced numerous albums, showcasing her versatility and commitment to Northumbrian music. Her collaborations span various genres and include notable artists such as Sting, The Chieftains, and the Penguin Café Orchestra. Her contributions extend beyond performance; she has composed music for theatre productions and served as a presenter for BBC Radio 3's Music Planet. In 2013, she formed the ensemble The Side, blending classical and folk elements, and later established The Darkening, a band that explores the ancient sounds of Northumbria. Their debut album received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to traditional music. Her dedication to music and culture has earned her several accolades, including the appointment as Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Queen's Medal for Music, recognizing her outstanding contribution to British music. A reimagining of her 1984 debut, titled Return to Kielderside, was released in 2024.
