Pylon was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1978 by art students at the University of Georgia: Vanessa Briscoe Hay on vocals, Randall Bewley on guitar, Michael Lachowski on bass, and Curtis Crowe on drums. Their first live show was in March 1979, followed by their debut single "Cool" that year. Pylon's breakthrough came when members of The B-52s promoted them in New York City. In 1980, they released their first full-length album Gyrate and toured with bands such as Talking Heads and U2. Their second album Chomp was released in 1983, after which the band disbanded. Pylon's influence on the Athens music scene and the American pop underground was significant, with their reputation solidified by a cover of "Crazy" on R.E.M.'s 1987 compilation album Dead Letter Office.
