Count Five, an American garage rock band, was formed in 1964 in San José, California. The group consisted of John "Mouse" Michalski on guitar, Roy Chaney on bass, John "Sean" Byrne on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Kenn Ellner on tambourine and harmonica, and Craig "Butch" Atkinson on drums. Initially known as The Squires, the band underwent several lineup changes before settling on their final name, Count Five, a nod to both their membership count and influence from The Dave Clark Five. Count Five's breakthrough came with their single "Psychotic Reaction", which reached Number 5 on the Billboard charts in late 1966. The song, initially conceived by Byrne but refined collectively, became a staple of garage rock. The band disbanded in 1969 as members pursued higher education. Notably, "Psychotic Reaction" was featured in Wim Wenders' film Alice in the Cities (1974). In 1987, Count Five reunited for a live performance at One Step Beyond club in Santa Clara, California, which was later released as Psychotic Reunion Live! The band was inducted into the San Jose Rock Hall of Fame in 2006.
