The St. Petersburg String Quartet is a Russian musical ensemble formed in 1985 at the Leningrad Conservatory. The group was established by students of the quartet class taught by Vladimir Ovcharek. The ensemble received awards at the All-Union Quartet Competition and the First International Shostakovich Competition. Its international career featured awards at chamber ensemble competitions in Tokyo, Florence, and Melbourne from 1989 to 1991. The quartet toured the United States in 1995 and 1996 and served as a resident ensemble at Oberlin College between 1996 and 2003. The group debuted in Great Britain at the 1998 Aldeburgh Festival. Its discography included the studio recordings Dvořák “American” Quartet - Mendelssohn Quartet No.2 (2007) and Shostakovich: Quatuors à cordes (2008). The recording of Shostakovich's quartets number 5, 7, and 9 was named best chamber recording of 2001 by Chamber Music America. The ensemble performed the premieres of five works by composer Zurab Nadareishvili.
