Linda Martin, born 27 March 1952 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is an Irish singer who first gained prominence as a member of the pop group Chips in the late 1960s. After the band released several singles, Linda Martin left in 1972 to pursue a solo career, returning to Chips the following year. Her breakthrough came in 1992 when she represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest with "Why Me?", a composition by Johnny Logan, and won the competition on 9 May 1992; the single reached number one on the Irish charts and entered the UK Top 100. The same year, Linda Martin released the EP Why Me, which included the title track and other recordings. She continued to perform and record throughout the 1990s, collaborating with Johnny Logan on Terminal 3 (1984) and participating in various national selections for Eurovision. Linda Martin has served as a judge on RTÉ’s You’re a Star and as a mentor for Jedward in 2012, while also maintaining a presence in television and pantomime. Her career is marked by consistent chart success in Ireland, multiple Eurovision appearances, and ongoing contributions to Irish pop music.
