The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, based in Rochester, New York, was founded in 1922 by George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company. The orchestra's first music director was Eugene Goossens. In its early years, the RPO made several recordings under names such as the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra, featuring prominent American composers like Howard Hanson and Samuel Barber. Notable recordings include William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony (1939) and George Gershwin's Concerto in F (1925). The orchestra has had several notable music directors, including Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman, and Ward Stare. In 2023, Andreas Delfs was appointed the RPO’s music director. The RPO sponsors the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and has a strong educational outreach program.
