Frank Crumit, born September 26, 1889 in Jackson, Ohio, was an American singer, composer, entertainer and vaudeville star who began his career at age five in a minstrel show. By 1913, he performed on the vaudeville stage, playing ukulele. Crumit made his Broadway debut in Betty Be Good (1918) and started recording for American Columbia in 1919, later transitioning to Victor Talking Machine Company. Crumit composed at least 50 songs, including "Buckeye Battle Cry" for Ohio State University. His notable songs include "Frankie and Johnnie" (1927) and "A Gay Caballero" (1928), which sold over four million records. In 1928, he married Julia Sanderson, and they became a popular radio duo known as the Singing Sweethearts of the Air, starring in Blackstone Plantation (1929–1934). He died from a heart attack on September 7, 1943 in New York City.
