With a long calling card, Mayer Hawthorne (born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1979) renovates 1970s soul with talent on his debut album A Strange Arrangement (2009). His 2011 follow-up How Do You Do confirms his predispositions in a style of retro soul tinged with funk and rap. Two years later, Where Does This Door Go was released, marking the start of a soft rock turn. After collaborating with Texas rapper 14KT on the album The Big Knock under the name Jaded Incorporated, he teamed up with producer Jake One for the disco-funk project Tuxedo and the album of the same name, released in 2015, before returning to solo work the following year with Man About Town.
