Born on November 11, 1938, Dr. Lloyd Miller is an American ethnomusicologist and jazz maestro who is capable of playing 100 instruments in 15 different ethnic and jazz styles. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he attended the Sorbonne and the Langues Orientales in Paris, France and then studied in Geneva, Switzerland for a short time. He spent six years playing jazz in Europe with artists like Don Ellis and Eddie Harris. While in Europe, he integrated himself into the Frankfurt, Stockholm, Brussels and Paris jazz scenes. Lloyd Miller returned to the United States in 1963 and earned his BA in Asian Studies and his MA in Middle East Studies. In 1970, Dr. Lloyd Miller was awarded a scholarship to return to Iran to complete his dissertation. Miller spent seven years in Tehran, Iran as an arts writer for several publications. While in Tehran, he was also known as Kurosh Ali Khan, a name he used while hosting a prime-time television show. Lloyd Miller has released over 30 titles as a leader, collaborator, or sideman including Jef Gilson Septet Avec Lloyd Miller (1961), Oriental Jazz featuring The Press Keys Quartet and the Lloyd Miller Trio (1968), Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics (2010), and the compilation A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz (2009).
