George Maharis, born on September 1, 1928 in Astoria, Queens, is an American singer and actor. He began his career as a singer while attending Flushing High School and later served for 18 months in the United States Marine Corps before earning his high school diploma. His first break came with appearances in musicals outside of New York City and he released several albums during the early 1960s, including George Maharis Sings! (1962), Portrait In Music (1962), and Where Can You Go For A Broken Heart? (1963). Notable singles from this period include "Teach Me Tonight" / "After The Lights Go Down Low" (1962) and "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" / "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" (1962). His music career continued with albums like Just Turn Me Loose! (1963), Make Love To Me (1964), and Tonight You Belong To Me (1964). Maharis also released the vinyl EP Route 66 / Can't Help Falling In Love / Where Does Happiness Go? / More I Cannot Do in 1965. His final album, New Route: George Maharis, was released in 1966. Maharis passed away on May 24, 2023.
