Stephen Flaherty, born September 18, 1960, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is an American composer of musical theatre and film. He began studying piano at age seven and composed his first musical score by fourteen. Flaherty attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, graduating with a B.M. in Musical Composition in 1982. Flaherty's breakthrough came with Once on This Island, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1990 and later transferred to Broadway. The musical won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in London in 1995 and was revived on Broadway in 2017, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Flaherty has collaborated extensively with Lynn Ahrens on several notable works, including Ragtime, which premiered on Broadway in 1998 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Original Score.
