Janice DeGaetani, born in 1933 in Massillon, Ohio, was an American mezzo-soprano trained at the Juilliard School under Serge Kagen. She made her New York debut in 1958. She had a fruitful collaboration with George Crumb (creating Ancient Voices of Children) and famously recorded Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire. She performed with the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. Her discography includes albums such as Chansons madécasses (1978), Songs by Stephen Foster (1972), and Songs by Stephen Foster, Volume II (1976). She was a voice professor at the Eastman School of Music and an artist-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival from 1973 until her death in 1989, due to complications from leukemia.
