Haim Serge El Baaz, known professionally as DJ Cheb i Sabbah, was born on August 7, 1947, in Constantine, Algeria, was an Algerian club DJ. He began his career as a DJ in Paris during the mid-1960s and moved to New York in 1968, where he acted with The Living Theatre and managed jazz musician Don Cherry. Cheb i Sabbah returned to DJing in the 1990s after a customer at a bioladen recognized his past career and offered him a job as a DJ. He released several albums, including Shri Durga (1999), Maha Maya (2000), and Krishna Lila (2002). In 2006, he was nominated for the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Club Global category. Cheb i Sabbah passed away on November 6, 2013, at the age of 66 due to complications from a stomach cancer diagnosis.
