The Stands were an English alternative rock band formed in 2002 in Liverpool. The group consisted of Howie Payne on vocals and guitar, Luke Thomson on guitar, Dean Ravera on bass, and Steve Pilgrim on drums. Initially featuring a revolving cast of musicians, the band solidified their lineup after performing at a local music event featured on ITV's This Is Music. Their breakthrough came when they were invited to support Oasis in December 2002 following a recommendation from Noel Gallagher. The Stands released their debut single "When This River Rolls Over You" in August 2003, followed by "I Need You" in October of the same year. Their first album, All Years Leaving, was released in February 2004 and peaked at Number 28 on the UK Albums Chart, featuring three Top 40 singles. The band toured extensively, supporting acts like Gomez, Paul Weller, and Oasis, and played major festivals including Glastonbury and V Festival. Their second album, Horse Fabulous, was released in July 2005 but saw limited promotion due to label restructuring at Echo Records. The band disbanded in November 2005 following their final show at the Carling Academy Islington. Post-split, Howie Payne released his debut solo album Bright Light Ballads in April 2009.
