Robert Stanley Whitlock, born on March 18, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, was an American musician known for his roles as a keyboardist and vocalist. He began his career in the soul music scene of the 1960s, performing with acts such as Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Whitlock's first contribution to a recording was in 1967 on Sam & Dave's single "I Thank You". In 1970, he co-founded Derek and the Dominos with Eric Clapton, contributing significantly to their album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Prior to this, Whitlock had collaborated on George Harrison's seminal album All Things Must Pass. He released several solo albums in the 1970s. After a hiatus, he returned to music in the late 1990s with collaborations such as It's About Time (1999), and continued releasing albums until his death on August 10, 2025.
