Destra Garcia is a Trinidadian soca musician and songwriter born on November 10, 1978, in Port of Spain. Raised in Desperlie Crescent, Laventille, she was influenced by her father, guitarist Lloyd Garcia, and her grandfather, jazz musician Frankie Garcia. Garcia established a musical career by winning her school’s Calypso Monarch title for five consecutive years. In 1999, she joined the Roy Cape All-Stars as a lead vocalist after recording the single “Ah Have A Man Already”. Garcia joined the band Atlantik in late 2002 and recorded her debut album, Red, White, Black, in 2003. This release featured the duet “It’s Carnival” with Machel Montano, and that same year she won the Carnival Road March title at Brooklyn’s Labour Day Carnival. Her discography included the albums Independent Lady (2006) and Queendom (2020). Garcia collaborated with performers including Nicki Minaj and Mr. Vegas.
