David Stoughton, an American musician and singer, was born in the United States. As an undergraduate at Harvard University, he became immersed in the folk boom of the 1960s, learning various guitar styles including bluegrass, blues, fingerpicking, and flatpicking. He began teaching guitar at the Newton School of Music and formed The Cambridge Electric Opera Company, which blended electronic and traditional musical elements. In 1968, Stoughton released his only album Transformer under Elektra Records, originally intended as an Opera Company album but released under his name to avoid confusion with Earth Opera. Transformer is noted for its unique and forward-looking sound, earning recognition from publications like Record Collector and Uncut. The album was included in Uncut's 2010 list of the "50 greatest lost albums." Stoughton's work has been referenced by experimental groups such as White Out and compared to peers including Tim Buckley and Love.
