Kenickie were an English rock band from Sunderland, formed in 1994. The group consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Lauren Laverne (born Lauren Gofton), drummer Johnny X (real name Pete Gofton), lead guitarist Marie du Santiago (born Anne Marie Nixon), and bass guitarist Emmy-Kate Montrose (born Emma Jackson). Named after a character from the film Grease, Kenickie released their debut EP, Catsuit City, in 1995. The band's breakthrough came with the release of "In Your Car" in January 1997, which peaked at Number 24 on the UK Singles Chart and opened Top of the Pops. Their debut album, At The Club, reached Number 9 on the UK Albums Chart in May 1997. Kenickie contributed to the Gary Numan tribute album Random that June and performed at Glastonbury later that summer. Their second album, Get In, was released in 1998 and received positive reviews but sold less well. The band disbanded on October 15, 1998, following a gig at the London Astoria. Kenickie have been credited with inspiring a wave of mainstream female guitar bands and influencing alternative rock acts.
