Joshua Alexander "Joe" Loss, born on June 22, 1909 in Spitalfields, London, is a British dance band leader and musician. He began violin lessons at age seven and later played with Oscar Rabin. In the early 1930s, Loss started leading bands at venues like the Astoria Ballroom and Kit-Cat Club. His breakthrough came in 1934 when he topped the bill at the Holborn Empire. Vera Lynn appeared with the Joe Loss Orchestra in her first radio broadcast in 1935. The band gained popularity through broadcasting, recording, and annual tours. In the 1950s and early 60s, Loss was resident band leader at the Hammersmith Palais. Notable hits include "In the Mood" and "Wheels—Cha Cha". The orchestra performed at Royal Variety Performances and royal family Christmas parties, earning Loss an OBE in 1978 and LVO in 1984. Loss passed away on June 6, 1990. Posthumous releases include Time To Dance (2003) and The Very Best Of Joe Loss (2007), with the Joe Loss Orchestra continuing to operate under the musical direction of Todd Miller.
